People talk a lot about about embracing failure or failing forward. But not always clear the context or meaning is well understood. If you’re working in an emergent area, you can consider technical and experiential aspects of your work. And truly emerging areas lack “right answers”, particularly for experiential.
For example, for Augmented Reality to take off, both the hardware and the experiences need to improve. The technical parts, while challenging, at least have known goals – lower weight, longer battery life, wireless, higher resolution, etc. But the experiences – we don’t have a good target. Say you want an AR interface that allows a person to make a better decision under stress while avoiding cognitive overload and attention tunneling. We don’t really have a good model for that. So we do rapid prototyping and fail in order to learn the left and right bounds of “better”, getting to “right.”
